چکیده

We developed the theoretical basis for long-term determination of airborne concentrations of unattached and attached radon progeny. The work was separated into two parts. First, we showed that (stacked and multiply etched) LR 115 detectors could be used to determine airborne concentrations of the short-lived radon progeny, Po and Bi. The equilibrium factor F between radon and its progeny could then be determined through the use of the reduced equilibrium factor Fred. The airborne concentrations of Pb could then be determined. Second, we developed a method based on the airborne concentrations of Po, Pb and Bi to determine the parameters of the Jacobi room model, viz., the ventilation rate lv, aerosol attachment rate la, deposition rate of unattached progeny ld and the deposition rate of attached progeny ld. With these parameters, the unattached fraction fp of the potential alpha energy concentration could also be determined. Knowledge of fp, together with F, would enable more accurate determination of the effective dose in the human lung. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Long-term determination of airborne radon progeny concentrations using LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detectors

This paper described the establishment of lognormal distributions for the Jacobi room model parameters with a view to improve an existing method for long-term passive measurements of the equilibrium factor using LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detectors, namely, through the proxy equilibrium factor (Fp) method. Fp is defined as (C1 þ C3)/C0 where C0, C1 and C3 are the concentrations of 222Rn, ...

Nuclear Track Detectors

Approximately half of the human exposure to radiation is due to indoor airborne shortlived progeny (decay products) of the radon gas (Rn). To measure the airborne concentrations of radon gas and/or its progeny, Nuclear Track Detectors (NTDs) are usually employed. The NTDs register the alpha particles emitted by radon gas and its progeny in the form of tracks in the NTDs, which will become visib...

A fast method to measure the thickness of removed layer from etching of SSNTD based on EDXRF

Solid state nuclear track detectors are commonly used for measurements of concentrations of radon gas and/or radon progeny. All these measurements depend critically on the thickness of the removed layer during etching. However, the thickness of removed layer calculated using the etching period does not necessarily provide a su7ciently accurate measure of the thickness. For example, the bulk etc...

Field calibration of the glass-based retrospective radon detectors for epidemiologic applications

The primary goal of this PhD research was to obtain critical information needed to further calibrate the novel glass-based retrospective radon detectors (RRDs) by characterizing the quantitative relationship between radon gas concentrations, the surface-deposited activities of various radon progeny, the airborne dose rate, and various residential environmental factors through both actual field ...
